Abstract

In order to find out the real acts regarding the morbidity status in Depaartment of Nursing, College of Medicine, Yonsei University, a study was acne regarding the. health of the 600 nursing students who were registered in the Department of Nursing, and who lived in the student dormitory during the period form March, 1960 to February, 1965. The conclusion of this study are as follows: A Out-patient treatment of students.
1. Gastrointestinal diseases ocured most frequently and these were followed by diseases related to the skin and connective tissues, espiratory infections and parasitic infections.
2. The highest incidence of illness occured in 1963.
3. The third year students show the highest incidenceof disease.
4. The most students were treated in the month of July and the fewest students were treated in the months of Ocober and November.
5. More students went to the Department of Internal Medicine than other Depaartments. Next in order of frequency were the Department of Dentistry, Dermatology, E. N. T. Surgery and Ophthalmology.
6. The majority of the diseases treated in the medical Out-Patient department consist of gastroenteritis, upper respiratory infections, pulmonary tuberculosis and Bronchitis Sprain abscess and carbuncle were treated in the Surgical Department. Tonsillitis, rhinitis and chronic sinustitis were treated in the E.N.T. Department. Dermatitis and eczema were treated, in the Department of Dermatology. Hordeolum and conjunctivitis were treated in the Department of Ophthalmology and caries and gingivitis were treated in the Department of Dentistry.
7. Approximately 60 percent of the students treated in the out-patient department were seen only once. The average frequency of visits per sick student was 2.3 while the average per student visit was 1.5.
8. The total out-patient medical expenses for 5 Years amounted to 132,370.0 won which amounts to 326.0 won per student.
B. In-patient treatmtnt of students.
1. The highest prevalence was seen in respiratory diseases and next in frequency were - gastrointestinal, infectious and parasitic disease.
2. The most in-patient cases occured in 1961.
3. The most in-patient cases occured among the thired year students.
4. More sick students were seen in the months of July and August while less were seen October and November.
5. The most students were with medical diseases and next in order were E.N.T. surgeny and dermatology.
6. The majority of diseases treated in the medical in-patient department cnsisted of acuted gastroenteritis, influenzas, upper respiratory infections and pulmonary diseases. those treatd by the Department of Surgery were acute apppendicitis and filbroma. Tose litis and chronic upper sinusitis were treated by the Department of E.N.T. Dermatitis was treated by the Department of Dermatology.
7. Approximately 77 per cent of the total in-patient cases were dischared form the hispitan before the tenth day and the average hospital stary per sick student was 10.1 days while that per student was 1.1 days.
8. The total in-patient medical expenses for 5 years amounted to 478,755.0 won which is an average of 7,253.8 won per sick studetn and 797.9 won per student
